At least ten people shot in the New Orleans French Quarter

New Orleans police are investigating a mass shooting that wounded 10 people early Sunday near the city's famed French Quarter.

The shot was sacked along Canal Street 700 block at approximately 3:25 am local time.

Two remained critical Sunday morning, according to police.

Police Commissioner Shaun Ferguson first confirmed that 10 people had been shot dead.

"An individual was detained near the scene", police said, but her or his possible involvement in the shooting is under investigation.

Officers had been in the locality following the Bayou Classic football game, an annual event between Grambling State and Southern University held on Thanksgiving weekend.

In a statement around midday Sunday local time, Ferguson said the investigation was still in the "very beginning stages". As per updates from the police, two of the victims are in critical condition.

No arrests have been made in connection with the incident, according to the release.

He said New Orleans has seen a significant reduction in violent crime over the past four years. No law enforcement officers were injured in the incident, the agency noted. "Unfortunately, there were so many people here that we could not determine who actually fired those shots at that time".

People wait with their luggage to leave the area on Canal Street next to Bourbon Street near the scene of a shooting.

"We urge anyone with any information regarding this incident to contact NOPD Homicide Unit detectives at 504-658-5300".
