Eskom escalates to stage 4 load shedding

Eskom escalates to stage 4 load shedding

This will apply from 10am to 11pm today (Monday, 9 December). This was owing to a further loss of capacity at Medupi where heavy rains in Mpumalanga province led to flooding.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has made the decision to fly home from a working visit to Egypt on Tuesday, as the issue with Eskom intensifies. "The nature or extent of the possible water supply interruptions is not yet known, but our operational teams are on full alert and the situation being monitored intensively".

Production would suffer because ore was stockpiled for processing at a later date resulting in the lock-up of inventory metal, which carries a cost.

Mothae said they were working on having a more predictable system in the long run, adding, however, that that might take some time. Stage 6 load shedding means that 6,000 megawatts will be shed. If all the areas are turned on at once the substation may overload and power will trip.

James Brent Styan, author of "Blackout - The Eskom Crisis", agreed with Mavuso that prolonged load-shedding is needed to fix Eskom.

'We remind customers that load shedding at Stage 4 is no cause for alarm as the system is being effectively controlled. That's the time load-shedding will occur in Krugersdorp on the given date. According to the table provided, Krugersdorp should not be experiencing load-shedding on the day.

Load shedding is thus now being implemented over and above the advertised schedule.

At this stage it is uncertain how this will affect residents.

The frequency of load-shedding increases as higher stages are used.
