Hallmark Channel pulls ad showing lesbian wedding

"All kisses, couples and marriages are equal celebrations of love, and we will no longer be advertising on Hallmark", Chi said. Zola was then notified this week that four of their six ads would not air. "Please explain. We're all ears". Instead, the "Shut Up and Drive" singer is asking for the ads to be reconsidered saying that Hallmark could "solidify an incredibly loyal demographic". Hallmark had advanced with the times and began airing the Zola commercial on December 2, 2019, and even stated they are open to more homosexual-themed programming. Zola has said it won't advertise on the channel.

"Hallmark approved a commercial where a heterosexual couple kissed", Mike Chi, Zola's chief marketing officer, told the New York Times.

The Hallmark Channel, which did not immediately respond to The Post on Sunday, has said it pulled the ads because the debate they sparked "on all sides was distracting from the goal of our network, which is to provide entertainment value". "The decision not to air overt public displays of affection in our sponsored advertisement, regardless of the participants, is in line with our current policy, which includes not featuring political advertisements, offensive language, R-rated movie content and many other categories", he said. A spokesperson for the channel told the New York Times that the "public displays of affection" were in violation of the channel's policies, but did not provide comment on why the channel allowed for advertisements featuring heterosexual couples kissing.

The organization said other viewers expressed concerns over the Zola commercial on the channel's online complaint board.

Gilchrist also noted that Hallmark Channel recently said it would be open to producing a Christmas movie featuring a same-sex couple.

"1MM has personally spoken with Crown Media Family Networks CEO Bill Abbott who confirmed Hallmark Channel has pulled the Zola.com commercial, featuring a same-sex couple, from their network", the group shared on its website. The group also wrote: "The call to our office gave us the opportunity to confirm the Hallmark Channel will continue to be a safe and family-friendly network".

Representatives for Crown Media did not immediately respond to The Post's inquiries. One Million Moms, which is part of the American Family Association, launched a petition regarding the commercial that gained traction. Some deployed the hashtag #BoycottHallmarkChannel.

'Isn't it nearly 2020?': LGBT+ activists and groups express fury at "family-friendly" channel tugging same-sex couple adverts. Another wrote, "Why would you show a lesbian wedding commercial on the Hallmark Channel?".

This article has been included to include a statement from GLAAD.

What the outcome of this decision will be remains to be seen - but there is no question that Hallmark pulled the commercial due to the Conservative backlash. "We expect this will make some people unhappy".

Mike Chi, Zola's (the wedding-planning site) chief marketing officer, says that the company has made a decision to pull the rest of their ads from Hallmark.
