NYC Beefs Up Police Presence In Some Jewish Communities Amid Anti-Semitic Incidents

Rep. Lee Zeldin, R-N.Y., is blaming New York Mayor Bill de Blasio for a string of anti-Semitic attacks, including one on Friday.

Later that day, a group of teenagers assaulted a Jewish man in his 50s in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Crown Heights. "Anyone who terrorizes our Jewish community WILL face justice", he added. "Anti-Semitism is an attack on the values of our city - and we will confront it head-on".

"In addition to heightened visibility, there will be increased visits to houses of worship and other critical areas in the community", de Blasio wrote.

Police are investigating several possible anti-Semitic attacks that have occurred throughout New York City since December 13, the New York Police Department (NYPD) told reporters at a press conference Friday.

At around 1:40 a.m., a 25-year-old man had anti-Semitic slurs yelled at him while walking on Kingston Avenue near President Street. The victims, who range in age from 22 to 31, suffered minor pain, police said.

- Later Tuesday in Crown Heights, a 56-year-old man said that a group of people approached him, and that one of them punched him, while he was walking. Police did not immediately say how many officers would be deployed to the neighborhoods.

It follows a series of anti-Semitic attacks this week and an increase in overall hate crimes around the city.

At least six incidents of hate-fueled attacks have been reported over the past week.

"These incidents of harassment and assault are terrifying for the Jewish community, especially in light of the recent horrific attack in Jersey City", ADL regional director Evan Bernstein said in a statement. New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal said the attack was driven by hatred of Jews and law enforcement.

On Monday, a 65-year-old Jewish man was struck in the face and kicked while on the ground by another man, who had reportedly hurled an anti-Semitic insult at the victim before attacking. The victim's 3-year-old child was with her during the attack.

The suspect, Steven Jorge, 28, also allegedly yelled "F*** you, Jew", at the victim, Jones said.

The city has seen at least eight other anti-Semitic attacks, majority in Brooklyn, over the last few weeks. Police have not yet classified it as a hate crime.

"The despicable crimes committed against our Jewish community over the last 24 hours are an attack on ALL New Yorkers", the mayor tweeted. For your security, we've sent a confirmation email to the address you entered.

The NYPD said arrests related to hate crimes are also up compared to the same period previous year.
