NZ police suspend search for 2 missing in volcanic eruption

The other is Kiwi tour guide Hayden Marshall-Inman, aged 40.Their bodies are believed to have washed out to sea, and may never be recovered.

Bay of Plenty District Commander, Superintendent Andy McGregor said the decision followed extensive shoreline and substantial aerial searches from east of White Island to north of Cape Runaway.

On Sunday, McGregor said they searched for the missing victims over the weekend but found nothing of significance and would make "a decision on further search activity" following a review of the situation.

On Tuesday morning the desperate two-week search for an Australian teenage girl still missing after the deadly eruption was called off.

The US woman, who also went by the name Mary, had been on Whakaari/White Island with her husband Pratap "Paul" Singh, with both reportedly suffering severe burns in the eruption.

Many were on an excursion as part of a Royal Caribbean cruise aboard the Ovation of the Seas, that had left Sydney two days earlier. "Police remain ready to respond if new information comes to light", he added.

Hayden Marshall-Inman's family held a celebration of his life last week as they waited for news from searchers.

New Zealand authorities are investigating the circumstances around the disaster.

There were 47 people on White Island at the time of the blast.

The families of American couple Laura and Matthew Urey have thanked the public for their support following them being severely burnt while honeymooning in New Zealand.

The number of deaths from the eruption rose to 19 on Monday as another person died at a hospital in Auckland.

There has been criticism that tourists were allowed on the island, given the risks of an active volcano. That has led to speculation the tragedy could lead to major changes for New Zealand's thrill-seeker tourism industry.

His brother, Mark Inman, wrote a letter to New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern pleading to do the job himself.
