Plane crash in Kazakhstan kills 7 people

In January 2013, a passenger plane with 20 onboard, crashed near Almaty, killing all passengers and crew members on board. In a post, the news website said that the editor, Dana Kruglova, was heading from Almaty to Nur-Sultan, the capital city, to celebrate New Year's.

The Bek Air flight was en route from Almaty, Kazakhstan's largest city, to the country's capital of Nur-Sultan. It was just like in the movies: people were howling, screaming, and crying.

The country's emergencies committee released a list of 12 people who died, including the captain, revising down earlier tolls provided by officials and media.

Deputy Prime Minister Roman Sklyar said the tail of the plane had touched the runway twice during takeoff.

A statement from Almaty International Airport said the plane had lost height before hitting a concrete fence and colliding with the building.

Nazaraliyev told Reuters that he had been seated beside an emergency exit in the 15th row, and that all the rows in front of him were shorn off as the plane split in half.

Bek Air cancelled all its flights soon after the incident but Almaty's airport said it was operating normally and the flight schedule was unaffected.

Emergency and security personnel are seen at the site of a plane crash near Almaty, Kazakhstan, on December 27, 2019. "It seemed like control over the plane was lost", he was quoted. However, the report of nine dead was an early one; some sites were reporting that the number of casualties had climbed to at least 14 people.

Kazakhstan's president Qasym-Jomart Toqayev has expressed deep condolences to the victim's families and friends, stating that those found guilty of the accident would be "severely punished" in accordance to the law.

Kazakhstan's air safety record is far from spotless.

According to Wikipedia, the airline was founded in 1999 as a business jet operator and acquired its first F-100 in 2010 and had eight aircraft until the crash.

The Kazakh government said the crashed plane was produced in 1996 and its most recent flight certificate was issued in May 2019.
