Republican senator upset by party stance, United States News & Top Stories

"I think impeachment, unfortunately, will only further embolden Donald Trump, increase his support and the likelihood that he'll have a better shot at getting elected while also seeing the likelihood that the House will lose a lot of seats to Republicans", Gabbard said, in a one-on-one interview with ABC News in Hudson, New Hampshire. "Liars!", Trump write on Twitter.

Trump was impeached by the House for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress for pressuring Ukraine to announce an investigation of Biden and his son.

The Republican lawmakers think they will be able to get as many as two Democrats to join them in voting for Trump's acquittal on both impeachment articles, according to The Hill.

House Minority Whip Steve Scalise said Speaker Nancy Pelosi has no grounds to withhold the articles of impeachment from the Senate as the standoff between the two chambers continues.

After the vote, Gabbard blasted the impeachment inquiry and proceedings as a "partisan endeavor" and said both Democrats and Republicans had a "zero sum mindset".

Key to that defense right now is Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who on December 19 told Fox News, "Everything I do during this [process], I'm coordinating with the White House counsel".

While the Democrats have urged Republicans to call witnesses including current and former senior White House officials and demanded relevant documents, McConnell - although not ruling out calling witnesses - has indicated a quick process to acquit Trump.

"I think we're all looking forward to that day (when President Trump is out of office), when we can put some of the current chaos and corruption and division behind us", said Buttigieg at a campaign stop in Iowa last week. "We've never seen anything like this happen in American history before, where one party weaponizes the Constitutional impeachment process to injure a President, a sitting President, as he moves into his reelection, that's never happened before".

This led many to assume that she was trying not to alienate any of her potential voters in the 2020 Democratic primaries.

"If it means that I am viewed as one who looks openly and critically at every issue in front of me rather than acting as a rubber stamp for my party or my president, I am totally good with that", Murkowski said. As the impeachment controversy mounted, Trump has subsequently claimed the "us" in his request to Zelenskiy referred not to him personally but to the United States.
