Scheer to step down

That is why I felt it was appropriate to speak to my friends and colleagues today in the House of Commons about one of the most hard decisions I have ever made.

Andrew Scheer, the leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, officially stepped down on Thursday, Dec. 12, 2019, after weeks of speculation about his future with the party.

Scheer's Conservatives swept Saskatchewan and nabbed all but one seat in Alberta in the October election; however, they did not pick up as many seats as the party had hoped for in vote-rich Ontario and Quebec.

Manitoba Sen. Don Plett, the Conservative leader in the upper house, said he felt "bitter" that Scheer was stepping down.

That would appear to rule out the need to choose an interim leader, which is different from how things were handled when former prime minister Stephen Harper resigned after his party lost power to the Liberals in the 2015 election.

Scheer should have been given the chance by his party to defend his record at the mandatory review of his leadership, which was supposed to have occurred in April.

Premier Jason Kenney has bid farewell on Twitter to outgoing Conservative leader Andrew Scheer, who announced his resignation in the House of Commons Thursday.

Scheer was 25 when he was first elected in the riding in 2004. "But I think it will really allow us to really examine our policies to see what's important to us and look at the big tent that is the Conservative party to once again draw people together and look at modern policies for the 21st century. that will appeal to all Canadians".

"Our party is not a cult of personality it is not shaped by whoever's name is on the masthead", Scheer said.

Conservative MP Candice Bergen on Andrew Scheer: "He's such a great guy; he actually would have made a very, very good prime minister".

Barrett is a supporter of Stand With Scheer, a website and Twitter account in favour of Scheer remaining as party leader following the election.

"It's routine for party leaders to expense things like clothing or".

He called the election loss "pretty much a given, you know, as far as regions go across Canada".

"We were exclusively dedicated to triggering a leadership election process, that's happened, so we'll be wrapping up and looking forward to seeing who throws their hat in the ring". "It's in no way related to your duties as leader of the party", Teneycke, who has been openly critical of Scheer's leadership, told As It Happens host Carol Off.

On Thursday, Scheer said he was proud of his time as leader, noting there are more Conservative MPs than there were before the October 21 election.

He will stay on as leader until a new one is picked. If I had to bet, I'd expect former Progressive Conservative leader Peter McKay will win out.

"For this particular organization, we've accomplished our objectives", Conservative Victory co-founder Sara MacIntyre told CTVNews.ca on Thursday.

"Shortly after Mr. Scheer was elected leader, we had a meeting where I made a standard offer to cover costs associated with moving his family from Regina to Ottawa". He will stay on as an MP. I want to thank my colleagues in the Conservative party. We speak as a united voice in acknowledging that.
