Switzerland avalanche hits marked ski trail; 2 injured

Search and rescue teams are combing popular ski resorts in the European Alps for possible victims of four avalanches that have injured at least two people on Boxing Day.

The Austrian ski resort of Angokel experienced three avalanches this morning while the Swiss resort of Andermatt was hit by one. Police and rescuers searched the snowslide after witnesses said more people might be buried.

At this stage, the exact number of people involved is not known.

Four more were retrieved unhurt, but it was unclear how many others could be buried under the snow, a police spokesman said, adding that a large rescue squad was on the site.

The Swiss Police for the canton of Uri did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.

The search team was comprised of five avalanche search dogs, three helicopters, about 25 skiers, the Uri ambulance service, the Uri Kanton police and the Andermatt-Sedrun piste rescue.

The avalanche took place just before 11am on Thursday in the Oberalppass area of the ski resort.

According to Blick, police are also investigating whether the avalanche occurred spontaneously, or if it was set off by another skier or snowboarder.

According to the Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research (SLF) the region of Andermatt had a raised avalanche danger level of three out o five.

Andermatt, located almost 70 miles south of Zurich, is popular with skiers from around the world.
