Wawa warns of PoS malware that's been stealing credit card data

Even if you aren't directly affected by the Wawa breach, the seemingly nonstop hacking of customer information should prompt you to safeguard your personal data.

Wawa officials said their payment processing servers were infected with malware starting on March 4 of this year and by April 22, was present on most of the chain's systems. Store ATMs were not impacted, Wawa says. The company added that potentially all in-store payment terminals and fuel dispensers at Wawa locations were affected, though the infection never posed a risk to its ATM machines.

"Well, first of all, what happened at Wawa, someone put malware on their payment processing system and, as a result, gained access to credit card information, debit card information".

Wawa announced Thursday it is notifying people who have potentially been impacted by a data breach that affected customer payment card information used at potentially all store locations during a specific timeframe. It did not affect PINs, credit card CVV2 numbers (the three- or four-digit security code printed on the card) and driver's license information used to verify age-restricted purchases. You can call Wawa's special hotline at 1-844-386-9559 or visit their website for more information and for details on how to enroll in their credit monitoring. Wawa is a chain of 850 convenience and fuel retail stores located in Delaware, Florida, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington, DC.

The company said it doesn't yet know how many customers were affected.

Mark McCreary, a cybersecurity expert with Fox Rothschild, said the information exposed in the Wawa breach poses a relatively low threat to customers.

Writing on Twitter, Jake Williams, a cybersecurity consultant and the head of Augusta, Georgia-based Rendition InfoSec, noted that although the malware went undetected for a long time, the company's incident response team deserved credit for responding quickly once the issue was finally discovered.

The company, along with law enforcement and an outside security forensic team, is investigating the incident. We continue to take steps to enhance the security of our systems. They still run on traditional technology that receives payment information from the card's magnetic stripe.
