‘Absolute red alert’: Journalist Glenn Greenwald charged with cybercrimes in Brazil

Prosecutors alleged that he aided the hackers, which Greenwald denied. Greenwald told Chotiner, "I think that what a lot of people are not fully understanding about Brazil is that there are a lot of people in the government, beginning with the President himself, who explicitly want a resurrection of the military dictatorship that ruled the country until 1985".

Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories. Last year, a Supreme Court justice, Gilmar Mendes, issued a writ prohibiting police from investigating the journalist, citing concerns about freedom of the press.

The Telegram exchanges in question are linked to The Intercept's extensive reporting series questioning the ethics and methods employed by the anti-corruption taskforce, which began in June 2019.

The charges against Mr. Greenwald come amid frequent clashes between Mr. Bolsonaro's government and reporters over their coverage of hot-button topics ranging from environmental policy to corruption.

"This denunciation-brought by the same prosecutor who just tried and failed to criminally prosecute the head of the Brazilian Bar Association for criticizing Minister Moro-is an obvious attempt to attack a free press in retaliation for the revelations we reported about Minister Moro and the Bolsonaro government", he said.

Glenn Greenwald spoke to the New Yorker this week about the charges against him in Brazil - revealing the dangers he faces as an adversarial journalist under Jair Bolsonaro's presidency.

Prosecutors maintain that Greenwald played a "clear role in facilitating the commission of a crime", by telling hackers to delete their own archives to help cover their tracks from Brazilian prosecutors.

Snowden, who leaked files to Greenwald and others that became a Pulitzer prize-winning series of Guardian stories exposing illegal spying by United States intelligence agencies, said the reporter's arrest was an "absolute red alert".

The prosecutors' investigation resulted in the jailing of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Brazil's highest-polling presidential candidate at the time, and the subsequent presidential election was won by the far-right Jair Bolsanaro, who appointed Moro as his justice minister.

Greenwald's lawyers called the prosecutors' allegations "bizarre" and said the accusations challenge the top court ruling protecting the journalist and freedom of the press in Brazil.

"We dearly hope Glenn is safe and is able to continue doing his job as a journalist", Timm said in the statement.

The big picture: Greenwald, who is best known for publishing leaked documents from Edward Snowden about US domestic surveillance, is a co-founder of The Intercept Brazil.

Greenwald's charges have sparked controversy, as the Brazilian federal police said last December that it could not find any evidence of wrongdoing in the journalist's modus operandi.

News of the criminal complaint on Tuesday was slammed by journalists and campaigners as a politically motivated effort to gag free speech. "We urge the Brazilian authorities to drop all charges again and to protect press freedom". Timm expanded on his criticism of the Bolsonaro government in a column for the Guardian Wednesday, saying the decision to charge Greenwald "reeks of authoritarianism". "Computer crime laws should never be used to criminalise legitimate journalistic practice", it said.

Bolsonaro's son, Eduardo, who is also a lawmaker, welcomed the charges with a sarcastic tweet.
