AG Barr: Pensacola Shooting was an 'Act of Terrorism'

The Department of Justice has determined that a December 6 shooting at Naval Air Station Pensacola was an act of terror, Attorney General William Barr said in a press conference Monday.

Mohammad Saeed Alshamrani, a 21-year-old member of the Royal Saudi Air Force training at the Pensacola Naval Air Station, opened fire last month at the base.

Fifteen of the Saudi trainees - including some who'd been found to have the jihadi or anti-American materials - were also found to have had "some kind of contact with child pornography", Barr said.

Federal authorities are still examining the shooting and also analyzing proof.

The Trump administration is planning to announce on Monday that more than 20 Saudi students receiving military training in the United States will be sent back to their home country, according to two USA officials familiar with the matter. Once discovered, an investigation was launched into other Saudi members present at the base. Some lawmakers, including a top Republican ally of President Donald Trump, have called for Saudi Arabia to be suspended from an American military training program.

The attack brought fresh complications to U.S. -Saudi relations at a time of heightened tensions between the United States and Iran, Saudi Arabia's regional rival.

Joshua Watson, left, Cameron Walters, centre, and Mohammed Haitham, right, were killed in the December shooting at the Florida naval base.

At the very least among the phones was sacked by a constable's replacement throughout the strike, yet private investigators think they might still have the ability to draw out information from the gadget, according to an individual knowledgeable about the issue. "Obviously, Pensacola showed that there had been errors in the way that we vetted, and out of an abundance of caution Secretary Esper has taken these actions to protect our service men and women", O'Brien said.

The US is set to expel at least a dozen Saudi military students accused of links to militant groups and having possession of child pornography following an investigation into a shooting rampage by a Saudi officer in Florida, media reported on Saturday.

"They fully cooperated in the investigation, as did all other Saudi cadets who were interviewed by the FBI at the base and in other bases around the country", he said.

"That training pause is still in place while we implement new screening and security measures", Defence Department spokesman Lt. Col. Robert Carver told CNN. He was fatally shot by a sheriff's deputy.

The shooter posted a message on social media in September that stated "the countdown has begun".
