CDC confirms second case of coronavirus in the U.S., expects more soon

Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar told Fox News on Friday that Americans should "feel confident in" the country's approach to the virus.

If confirmed, the case will be the third in the United States and the first on the East Coast.

The second case was confirmed in a patient who had recently returned to IL from a trip in Wuhan, China, where the outbreak of the coronavirus has been taking place.

There is evidence of human-to-human transmission, with the virus spreading from patients to family members and healthcare workers. The woman is now hospitalized in an isolation room, but she is in stable condition and doing well, Dr. Allison Arwady, the commissioner of Chicago's Department of Public Health, said during a news conference today (Jan. 24). Two previous coronavirus outbreaks, MERS and SARS, both are thought to have originated in bats. This version of coronavirus is new and had never been seen before until the end of 2019.

"While this situation poses a very serious public health threat, CDC believes that the immediate risk to the public is low at this time."

3M officials would not confirm that they ran out of stock. It's unknown when the results will be available.

"I would caution against jumping to any premature conclusions about the severity of this because the epidemic is still unfolding", she said in a phone interview.

One of the patients is an unnamed student in Texas, who came down with a respiratory issue two weeks after traveling from Wahun. The person was taken directly to the hospital from RDU for assessment and care using the appropriate infection prevention measures.

People who were at RDU or the hospital at the same time as the person was there are not considered at risk for infection. Now known as 2019-nCoVs, the new coronavirus has three distinct strains and is around 88 percent genetically-related to SARS, the notorious respiratory illness that started in China in 2002 and went on to kill over 774 people around the world.

"The good news is that the data so far suggest that this virus may have a lower mortality than SARS, we have a diagnostic test and there is greater transparency than decades gone by".

She said so far 63 "persons under investigation" in the USA - people with recent travel to Wuhan with respiratory illness - are being assessed. However, medics are on alert for anyone who has traveled to Wuhan and shows flu-like symptoms. The Sars (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) virus that killed almost 800 people globally in the early 2000s was also a coronavirus, as is the common cold.

For now, the organization recommends simple measures to keep yourself safe from this and other respiratory viruses, like frequent hand-washing and covering your mouth and nose when you sneeze.
