CHINA Coronavirus, Beijing confirms 81 dead and 2,761 infections

Wuhan, the epicentre of the coronavirus outbreak, suspended visa and passport services for Chinese citizens until January 30 in order to strengthen control over the virus outbreak, the city's exit-entry bureau said in a statement on January 27.

Hong Kong authorities barred residents of China's Hubei province, the centre of the coronavirus outbreak, from entering the city, in response to mounting pressure to enact preventative measures to contain the spreading epidemic.

Landlocked Mongolia, which is heavily dependent on trade with China, closed the border with its huge neighbor to cars. Neither has reported any cases of the virus. "Our experts are extraordinary!"

Universities, primary and secondary schools, and kindergartens across the country will postpone the start of the semester, said a State Council General Office circular.

It was not immediately clear if the death was included in the total.

There have been no reported deaths linked to the virus outside of China. The government announced it is sending an additional 1,200 health workers - along with 135 People's Liberation Army medical personnel - to help the city's stretched, hospital staff.

Xinhua said medical supplies are being rushed to the city, including 14,000 protective suits, 110,000 pairs of gloves and masks and goggles.

Malaysia bans visitors from Wuhan.

"Controlling the Wuhan epidemic and improving the health of Wuhan people is good news for the whole country", Li told the crowd.

He also visited the construction site of a new hospital due to be built in days.

The comments are a rare instance of public anger outpacing the army of online censors in China, where criticism of government figures is usually scrubbed.

"We certainly expect there to be an impact on our economy, business and consumer confidence this year especially as the situation is expected to persist for some time", Singapore's trade minister Chan Chun Sing said Monday.

Many observers have speculated that some officials will be punished in the days and weeks to come, especially after Wuhan Mayor Zhou Xianwang admitted on state TV that the city's warnings "were not sufficient" and the infection rate will likely continue to climb.

Nepal said a 32-year-old man arriving from Wuhan had tested positive for the deadly disease.

Investors are anxious about the impact on travel, tourism and broader economic activity.

China extended its Lunar New Year holiday three more days to discourage people from travelling as it tries to contain the spread of a viral illness that has caused 80 deaths, the government said Monday.

Asian and European shares tumbled, with Japan's Nikkei average sliding 2%, its biggest one-day fall in five months.

The cut in industrial and consumer spending threatens to slow down Chinese economic growth, which Beijing is struggling to support after plummeting to a multi-year low of 6.1% last year.

There were 2,744 confirmed cases by midnight Sunday, the National Health Commission announced.

China also reported eight cases in Hong Kong and five in Macao.

Twenty-four new deaths were confirmed in Hubei on Monday, and another in the southern island province of Hainan, bringing the overall death toll to 81, while confirmed infections swelled to more than 2,700 nationwide.

Chinese authorities have imposed a temporary ban on the selling of wildlife.

Much is not known about it, including how easily it spreads and just how deadly it is.
