China to allow worldwide experts to examine coronavirus there

VANCOUVER-The first B.C. case of the novel coronavirus that has claimed more than 100 lives and infected more than 4,000 people has been found in the Vancouver Coastal Health region.

The German man is stable and receiving treatment while in isolation.

Though he was trying to protect himself, said Dr. Henry, "clearly he came in contact with somebody, probably unknowingly", she explained.

At least 13 countries have said they will evacuate their citizens from Wuhan, China, the epicenter of the conflict.

On Sunday, Jan. 26, he followed public health messaging, contacted a primary health-care provider to notify them that he had travelled to Wuhan city, was experiencing symptoms and would be coming for assessment and care.

The sample is now headed to the National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg for further confirmation - expected within 48 hours - although Henry said she is confident it is a positive case after it mapped and matched part of the disease's genome to the novel coronavirus.

Missouri health officials have not identified any cases of the virus, state health officials said.

"It's a sign that the system is working", Hajdu said in Ottawa.

The German Health Ministry confirmed late on Tuesday that three further cases of thenew risky strain of coronavirus have been discovered in Bavaria, increasing the total numer of patients in Germany to four. The vast majority of them were traveling to other locales around the country to celebrate the Lunar New Year, which isn't exactly the best news when you consider the entire point of a quarantine is to isolate something to a restricted area.

She cautioned people from getting their information on the spread of the virus from social media, pointing to rumours that can quickly spread.

"Americans should know this is a potentially very serious public health threat, but Americans should not worry for their own safety", said Alex Azar, secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

The B.C. government also said the risk of the virus spreading in the province remains low.

The BC Centre for Disease Control has a team of experts that support the province's operations in monitoring and controlling communicable and vaccine-preventable diseases.

There is now no vaccine to prevent 2019-nCoV infection.

KDHE says specimens will be sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for testing on Tuesday.
