Dozens Killed As Avalanches Hit Pakistan-Controlled Kashmir

At the end of British colonial rule in 1947, the Indian subcontinent was divided into predominantly Hindu India and mainly Muslim Pakistan.

China's ambassador to the UN, Zhang Jun, warned against further escalation between India and Pakistan's over Kashmir and hoped that the Security Council meeting would encourage both countries to seek a solution through dialogue.

The Security Council held its first closed consultations on Kashmir since 1971 following India's surprise action in August to change the Himalayan region's status.

"As per the established practices and procedures within SCO, all eight members of SCO as well as four observer states and other global dialogue partners will be invited (by India)", the ministry said. "It happened in the blink of an eye", said Shahnaz.

Barring China, the world accepted India's position including the Arab world, formerly sponsors and supporters of Pakistan. News of the close-door discussions on Kashmir at UNSC at the instance of China came on a day that Indian foreign minister S. Jaishankar said that rapidly rising economies, India and China, have no choice but to get along with each other.

Earlier, the foreign minister had in a statement said that Iran owning up to its mistake of downing the Ukrainian passenger plane would likely ease up tensions in the region.

Iranian armed forces had admitted that they unintentionally shot down the Ukrainian airliner that crashed this week and blamed 'human error for the mistake.

Prime Minister Imran Khan Wednesday visited the injured at a military hospital in Muzaffarabad - the capital of Azad Kashmir - as rescue operations were underway for several victims missing after the incident, which occurred in the village of Surgan in the mountainous Neelam Valley, according to a statement by Azad Kashmir's disaster agency. However, it was thwarted by other members led by the United States and France.

According to diplomats familiar with the matter, China has invited Kashmir to a UN Security Council meeting to discuss "Peacekeeping in Mali" and is trying to force an informal discussion under the "Misc or Other Matter" category.

One of the fundamental principles of bilateral relationship is to refrain from intervening in internal affairs, Kudashev said at the embassy here. Replying to a question on why China, which in the past has advocated that the Kashmir issue should be peacefully resolved between India and Pakistan, has now changed its stand by including UNSC resolutions and United Nations charter, Geng said Beijing's position on Kashmir is very clear.

China, in the meeting, had strongly criticised the move to reorganise Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories.

On his part, Chinese envoy Zhang Jun in NY said, "I am sure the meeting will help both the parties to understand the risk of further escalation and will encourage them to approach each other and have a dialogue and seek solutions through dialogue".
