'Go Back Modi': West Bengal on Modi's two-day visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will hold a meeting at the Raj Bhavan on Saturday, a state secretariat official said on Friday.

Banerjee on Saturday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Raj Bhawan and told him to rethink on the issue of amended Citizenship Act and urged him to withdraw CAA, NRC and NPR.

Meanwhile, Mamata is also learnt to have agreed to attend the inaugural programme of the sesquicentennial celebrations of Kolkata Port on Sunday, where Modi would be the chief attraction. PM Modi is in Kolkata to take part in 150th-anniversary celebrations of the Kolkata Port Trust. Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar was also present at the unveiling of the statue.

After meeting Modi, Banerjee went straight to TMC students wing sit-in demonstration in the city against CAA, where she reiterated her stand that the new Citizenship law would never be implemented in Bengal.

The Prime Minister is also scheduled to launch an interactive light and sound show of Rabindra Setu (Howrah Bridge) and go to the Belur Math - global headquarters of the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission - on his first visit to the state after the Lok Sabha polls.

Sources in the state government said after receiving Intelligence Branch report that three organisations are planning large-scale gatherings at the airport and on the roads and also show black flags to the PM, the administration has planned to sanitise the route, which will be taken by the prime minister's convoy to reach the city from the airport.

Mamata addresed the media after the meeting and said PM Modi told her to come to New Delhi and discuss the matter.

But this time the significance of their possible meeting has been different in view of the Trinamul Congress chief's tirade against the Centre over the CAA and NRC across the state, although she has recused herself from the anti-CAA meeting called by the Congress for the Opposition parties in New Delhi on Monday.

Soon after meeting Modi at the Raj Bhavan in Kolkata, Banerjee participated in the demonstration being held by Trinamool Chhatra Parishad in Kolkata, against CAA and NRC.

Bibek Debroy, chairman of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister, too was present at the meeting which discussed a host of issues, including those related to agriculture, infrastructure sectors.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked the common man to share their ideas and suggestions, ahead of the Union Budget. According to a senior BJP leader, the party is likely to apprise the PM of the deteriorating law and order situation in Bengal.
