Iran confirms two missiles fired at downed Ukrainiane airliner

Ukraine's president on Monday urged Tehran to hand over the black box flight recorders of a passenger plane mistakenly shot down by Iranian forces during a spike in tensions with Washington.

Iran had said on Sunday it was trying to analyze the black boxes from the airliner its military shot down this month, denying an earlier report it would hand them to Ukraine.

Iran has made requests for equipment from US and French authorities so it can download information from the black boxes on a downed Ukrainian passenger plane but Tehran has not received a positive response, the civil aviation body said. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps accepted full responsibility for the downing of the Ukrainian airliner. "Among them in particular is the return of the black boxes", Prystaiko told reporters.

Iran initially denied hat it fired missiles at the plane but following global pressure it later admitted anti-aircraft fire from the country's Revolutionary Guard had been to blame.

Over the weekend, Hassan Rezaeifar, the official leading the investigation, was quoted by the state-run IRNA news agency as saying "the flight recorders from the Ukrainian Boeing are in Iranian hands and we have no plans to send them out".

Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Friday that the demonstrations were unrepresentative of the Iranian people and accused the country's enemies of exploiting the air disaster for propaganda purposes. "If it was adopted by the Iranian side, we will hear it today", Prystaiko said.

It said it had also sought the transfer of the equipment, but added that neither the BEA nor NTSB had "so far responded positively".

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada, which lost 57 of the 176 people killed in the crash, said Iran did not have the ability to read the data and he demanded the cockpit and flight recorders should be sent to France.

The victims of the crash included 82 Iranians, 63 Canadians, 11 Ukrainians, 10 Swedes, four Afghans, three Germans, and three British nationals.

The plane was brought down by Iranian air defences when the nation was on alert after tit-for-tat military strikes between the United States and Iran.

Meanwhile, Canada and its allies are pushing Iran to release the black boxes from the jetliner to another country that can quickly download its crucial flight data.

Iran says it will not negotiate with sanctions in place.

According to him, the conversation will also concern compensations to the families of the victims, but stressed that lawyers will discuss the topic in more detail.
