Libya's Haftar rejects Ankara, Moscow's call for ceasefire

Omar al-Tawil, a 15-year-old school boy in Damascus, is one of 24,000 Syrian youngsters now learning Russian at school after the country added the language of the government's most powerful ally to the curriculum. Since then, and largely due to Russia's general air support, the Syrian government has largely won the almost 9-year civil war and has taken control of most of the country by rebel hunters.

In his conversation with Assad, Putin said that "a huge distance has been covered in terms of restoring Syria's statehood and territorial integrity", Peskov said. The east-based government, backed by Hifter's forces, is supported by the United Arab Emirates and Egypt, as well as France and Russian Federation.

Since April 2019, Haftar has sought to defeat the militias that support the GNA, under the pretext that he is fighting a war against "terrorism".

The Russian president's last trip to Syria was a visit to the Russian military base of Hmeimim, in the coastal city of Latakia, in 2017.

Peskov said that Putin visited the Russian command post in Damascus and met President Assad there.

Bilateral talks followed, where the Russian president highlighted "there are signs of recovering peaceful life" on the streets of Damascus, the Kremlin reports.

He said that Assad thanked Putin for the visit and expressed appreciation for Moscow's help during the Syrian civil war.

Most important for Putin was that it strengthened Assad by allowing him to regain control over more Syrian territory.

The European Union's top diplomat and the foreign ministers of Britain, France, Germany and Italy condemned on Tuesday Turkey's plans to send military experts and trainers to Libya, saying foreign interference there was exacerbating instability.

Assad and Putin also discussed the Idlib situation as well as the developments in northern Syria and Turkey's actions there, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).

After talks between their presidents, Tayyip Erdogan and Vladimir Putin, in Istanbul, Turkey and Russian Federation called jointly for an end of hostilities, normalisation of life in Tripoli and other cities, and United Nations -sponsored peace talks.

His visit to the region comes as the United States military dominance there wanes while Russia's grows.

Revolutionary Guard Gen Qassem Soleimani's death has sparked calls across Iran for revenge against America.
