Microsoft’s upgraded Edge browser vs. Google Chrome: The results might surprise you

Running a number of tests, VentureBeat opted to pit Microsoft Edge against Google Chrome, Firefox, and courageous.

The new Microsoft Edge based on Chromium will receive updates based on a "roughly six-week" cadence.

Alternatively, general consumers on Windows can just wait, and have Windows Update automatically load the new browser onto their PC.

Microsoft Edge has already been one of the best Android browsers you can use for some time now. Edge is also now compatible with Google Chrome or Chromium extensions and can sync passwords from other Chromium browsers.

Microsoft will roll out the new Edge over the course of months to the Windows population that runs Windows 10 on devices.

Microsoft has also made its enterprise documentation available online here.

Microsoft has rebuilt its Edge web browser with the same Chromium source code that Google Chrome uses.

During the first stage of the rollout, starting January 15, anyone who wishes to switch to Chromium Edge immediately has to download the standalone installer manually from the official Microsoft Edge website.

To get the new Edge for Android and iOS, you'll have to head to the Google Play Store and App Store respectively.

Internet Explorer, which was first called Windows Internet Explorer, was first released as part of the add-on package Plus! for Windows 95 in 1995.

Microsoft added that its new browser identifies trackers and will allow users to decide which of these to block.

Lyndersay added that Microsoft is releasing MSI files that IT pros can use to deploy the new Edge browser. History and extension sync are now MIA, though Microsoft will eventually include them in an update later this year.

FastTrack will help you deploy Microsoft Edge to your organization at no extra charge if you are a customer with an eligible subscription to Microsoft 365, Azure, or Dynamics 365. While there have been stable releases before, all of these were not officially released by Microsoft.

Once you downloaded the installer, you only need to double-click the file to start the automated process to install the new Microsoft Edge, which will replace (hide) the legacy version.

The browser is available in 90 languages and Microsoft updated the mobile versions of Edge with new icons to match those of the new browser.

The initial rollout of the latest Microsoft Edge will be limited to a "subset of Windows Insiders" in the Windows Release Preview ring. Edge will replace the "Intune Managed Browser" later this month.
