Pablo Mari: Flamengo, center of the back for the medical Arsenal

Mari is now set to undergo his medical this weekend and as long as there aren't any unexpected problems, the 26-year-old will become Arteta's first signing since arriving as manager in December.

The defender was photographed with Edu, Arsenal's technical director, at Rio de Janeiro airport on Friday night ahead of his flight to London.

The left-footed centre-back used to be on the books at Manchester City in 2016 but spent time on loan at Girona, NAC and Deportivo La Coruna before joining Flamengo on a permanent deal last summer.

Goal has learned that Real Madrid loanee Dani Ceballos is looking for a move away from Arsenal this month, having grown frustrated with a lack of playing time under Arteta.

The Spaniard played against Liverpool in the World Club Championships and is now poised to link up with former City coach Mikel Arteta at Arsenal.

Arteta believes he has Arsenal heading in the right direction after reaching the end of his first month at the helm, with his message getting across despite picking up just two wins from seven games in all competitions.

Arsenal have been keen to bolster their defensive options following injuries to Calum Chambers, Kieran Tierney and Sead Kolasinac.

"But there are other positions as well, depending on what happens in the market, that we might need to assess".

"At the moment I am 50-50 [on anyone coming in]".

"I only want to bring somebody in if I'm really convinced that he can really improve the level that we have".
