Sanders leads, with Warren, Buttigieg, Biden chasing in Iowa Democratic poll

The margin of error of +/- 3.7 percent indicates an extremely tight race among the top tier of candidates.

Of the 701 likely Democratic caucusgoers questioned between January 2-8, 40 percent said their mind was made up on who they would support on caucus night - a 10 percentage point jump since November.

This is the first poll this election cycle landing Sanders in the lead without sharing the first-place spot with any other candidate, and it shows a clear upswing for the Vermont senator with momentum at a critical time in the race.

"There's no denying that this is a good poll for Bernie Sanders".

But Biden regains a sharp advantage in the 35 to 49 age group (41%-16%), and among voters older than 65 there is no contest: Biden enjoys 68% popularity, with second-placed Sanders floundering at 8%.

In the last Des Moines Register poll in November, Klobuchar also finished fifth, with 6% support. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota will be next to Buttigieg. Booker, after campaigning aggressively in Iowa for almost a year, has support of just 3% of likely caucus-goers, according to the poll.

The results also came hours ahead of the midnight Friday deadline for candidates to meet the Democratic National Committee's polling requirement to participate in Tuesday's scheduled debate in Des Moines, the last before Iowans caucus on February 3. Cory Booker, D-N.J., at 3 percent. With voters preparing to render the final verdicts, the poll serves as an early barometer of where the 2020 presidential candidates stand at a crucial juncture in the primary contest.

But another candidate struggling in Iowa - California billionaire Tom Steyer - will be debating in Des Moines on Tuesday.

The poll found Warren at 17%, Buttigieg at 16% and Biden at 15%.

"No one deserves to be our Democratic nominee unless they are able to build a broad and diverse coalition of voters", said Vedant Patel, spokesman for Biden's campaign in Nevada, citing endorsements and support from the Latino, black, Asian and Pacific Islander communities.

The Post noted that the former mayor, 37, "is among the leaders in polls in the predominantly white states of Iowa and New Hampshire but ... a lack of familiarity with him and concerns about his experience and sexual orientation appear to be contributing to his current standing" with black voters. Bloomberg, a late entrant into the race, is largely bypassing Iowa and other states that vote early. The former vice president's advisers have said Biden's strength in the Democratic race will show in racially diverse states such as Nevada, with its large Latino population, and SC, with its sizable black population.
