There Could Be Two ‘iPhone 9’ Models Coming This Spring

"Apple Inc. has applied for three notable design patents in Japan, showing an iPhone without notch".

It's day 2 of the new year, and new rumours about the 2020 iPhones are already pouring in.

When Apple released the iPhone X with a display notch, many were skeptical.

The design proposed by LetsGoDigital doesn't look practical if we take the front cameras into the account. Also, it will use a Touch ID fingerprint reader, not Face ID. However, do note that the SLP which are going to be used in the iPhone SE 2 will not be expensive like the one used in the iPhone 11 series. "Instead the new iPhone incorporates an in-display fingerprint sensor and an under-screen camera".

Rumours have been swirling for some time about Apple's plans to refresh its compact smartphone offering, which at the moment is still limited to the fairly old iPhone SE. So, it would be interesting to see as to how Apple will give this technology a twist and make it more interesting.

Up until now, there has been talk of the iPhone SE 2 - or iPhone 9 - being a modernized version of the iPhone 8, with a single photo sensor on the back and displaying on an LCD screen. Apple continues to sell both the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus right now, and it stands to reason that one or both of those will be discontinued once the "iPhone 9" arrives.

But according to a new report, the iPhone SE lineup might actually include two distinct models, bringing the total 2020 iPhone count to six.

The analyst claims was also backed up by a report which claimed Credit Suisse delivered a presentation in China which claimed Apple is preparing to unleash a notchless phone this year. The first involves fitting the phone with a large 5.5-inch display that's probably paired with thick bezels and a Touch ID home button, whereas the second option centers around a 6.1-inch screen coupled with slimmer bezels and a notch. The patent filed also indicate that the iPhone 12 Pro and the iPhone 12 Pro Max will come with a rectangular screen placed inside a round case.
