UAE’s Health Ministry confirms 1st cases of new Chinese virus in Mideast

The World Health Organization (WHO) has stated that the outbreak is an emergency in China, but that it is still too early to call it a public health emergency of global concern.

China has cut off access to Wuhan and 16 other cities in Hubei province to prevent people from leaving and spreading the virus further, The Associated Press reported.

The flight is carrying Americans who are being evacuated from Wuhan, China, over the deadly coronavirus.

The first group of Japanese evacuees from a virus-hit Chinese city arrived in Tokyo on Wednesday, wearing masks but showing a sense of relief. "The committee will help determine 'whether the current outbreak constitutes a public health emergency of worldwide concern", Tedros said in a tweet.

Sectors from mining to luxury goods have been shaken by concerns about the possibility of a worst-case pandemic.

Hong Kong stocks took a beating on the first day of trading after the Lunar New Year break. Casino and financial stocks led the Hang Seng index 2.5 percent lower to a seven-month trough. Travelers expected by the blackout will be contacted directly, the AA spokesperson said.

Thai Public Health Ministry reports six more confirmed new coronavirus cases in the country, raising the total cases in Thailand to 14. Airports around the world are screening passengers from China.

The UAE's state-run WAM news agency made the announcement citing the Health and Prevention Ministry, but offered no details on where the stricken family lived nor where they were receiving treatment.

It was not immediately clear how many people have been infected.

Currently, 17 countries outside of China have cases of infected patients, calling governments to act on the matter.

The Province of Ontario has confirmed its second case of the Wuhan novel coronavirus.
