Another 44 on Japan cruise ship Diamond Princess have coronavirus

Passengers Milena Basso and her husband Gaetano Cerullo are calling for help from President Trump after being trapped on a Diamond Princess cruise ship off the coast of Japan with at least 61 positive cases of coronavirus; Fox News correspondent Bryan Llenas reports. The ship typically has a crew of 1,100 and a passenger capacity of 2,670.

"The situation on board is getting worse day by day", 24-year-old ship security officer Sonali Thakkar told AFP.

Eleven of those who tested positive for COVID-19 are Filipino crewmembers that are now undergoing treatment in various hospitals in and around Tokyo.

One of the American passengers, Matthew Smith, who has been tweeting aboard the ship, including photos of the food passengers have been given, expressed disappointment at what he called "a monkey wrench" the American government was throwing into the quarantine aboard the ship.

Four of those infected - three Japanese and one foreign national, all in their 60s or 70s - are in a "severe" condition, the officials said, with two being treated in intensive care and the others receiving assistance in breathing.

The worker, in his 30s, had escorted a person infected with the virus in an ambulance from a quarantined cruise ship to a medical facility last Monday.

The Japanese government plans to start transferring them to temporary accommodation. altering its previous stance on managing the crisis.

But a message broadcast on the ship by the captain on Saturday night cast doubt on that timeline.

Results of tests on about 200 eligible passengers are underway, and those with chronic health problems or in cabins without operable windows will be given priority.

Authorities have expressed concern over the effectiveness of the quarantine, with dozens of new cases diagnosed nearly daily.

It had some 3,700 passengers and crew on board. "If I want to get upset, it's just gonna make me sick, so I don't want to get upset".

Senior health ministry official Gaku Hashimoto boarded the ship Friday morning to announce that all passengers "who are considered to be high risk in general health" would now be tested for the virus.

Officials saying they can only process 300 people a day, but hope eventually to expand this to 1,000.

In addition to the cases detected on the ship, Japan has confirmed 28 infections, among them evacuees who were flown back to the country from Hubei, the Chinese region where COVID-19 first emerged.
