Wealthier countries like the USA are better equipped, if not necessarily smarter, at catching these cases before they spread.

In China alone, there have been more than 75,000 cases of infection.

More than 500 cases of the new coronavirus have been detected in prisons across China, officials said on Friday, fuelling concerns about new clusters of the epidemic. "Let's not squander the window of opportunity we have", he said.

The Hubei health commission said it had counted 411 new cases of the virus in the province, with 319 in Wuhan and the rest spread out across several other cities.

The death was also reported by the president of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, in a TV interview. The virus patients at the Cheongdo hospital were transferred to other facilities, but 17 of them were in critical condition, Kim said without elaborating.

More than 1,000 people are sick with the pneumonia-like illness outside China, and some new cases have "no link" to China's Hubei province where the virus is thought to have originated in a wet market in Wuhan, the World Health Organization director-general said.

Chinese authorities have placed tens of millions of people under quarantine in central Hubei province, as well as restricting movements in other cities far from the epicentre, and closing schools nationwide.

Tedros singled out Iran's discovery of 18 cases and four deaths in two days - and that a traveler from Iran carried the virus to Lebanon, and another traveler from Iran to Canada. While the apparent impact of those measures has instilled hope in some that there is still time to stop circulation of the virus, skeptics warn that disease levels in China could rebound when the country eases its movement restrictions and allows people to return to their jobs. Tedros added that the change provides better clarity, since some of the clinically confirmed cases may not reflect COVID-19 infections. Authorities from BC's Fraser health region are tracing the contacts of the woman, who is in isolation at her home.

People in China mourned the death of another doctor who had succumbed to the disease Thursday, according to an announcement from the district in which he worked in Wuhan.

Authorities said officials deemed responsible for the outbreaks had been fired and the government had sent a team to investigate the bigger outbreak, in Shandong, media reported.
