Clemson, Georgia to meet in 2021 opener in Charlotte

Longtime rivals Georgia and Clemson will open the 2021 football season by playing at a neutral site in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The game will be played Saturday, Sept. 4 at Bank of America Stadium. On episode No. 1,135 (Feb. 19, 2020) of the podcast, Georgia fans can hear a discussion about Georgia's game with Clemson to open the 2021 season. App State, East Carolina, Clemson and Georgia all have incredibly dedicated fan bases and Charlotte has proven to be a tremendous host and destination.

But several sources are saying it's a done deal with Clemson and Georgia. Clemson defeated Todd Gurley and UGA 31-28 at home, then Georgia returned the favor in 2014 with a dominant 45-21 win from Nick Chubb, Todd Gurley, and more.

"The eyes of the nation will be on Charlotte as we start the 2021 season", said UGA J. Reid Parker Director of Athletics Greg McGarity."It is yet another opportunity to strengthen our schedule and provide an opportunity for our supporters to enjoy another huge matchup. I know our coaches and players will be excited for the challenge to kick off the season in this kind of environment". They last played each other in 2013 and 2014, with Clemson winning at home in 2013 and Georgia winning at home in 2014.

Georgia leads the all-time series 39-16-4.

The teams are scheduled to meet five more times after the 2021 game - in the 2024 Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game in Atlanta and in a pair of home-and-home sets in 2029-30 and 2032-33.

Clemson is taking a similar approach to scheduling, adding future games against Georgia, LSU, Oklahoma and Notre Dame.

South Carolina State, UConn and Wyoming - none of which are Power 5 schools - joined the Gamecocks.
