Coronavirus death in Philippines marks first outside China

The virus has infected more than 14,000 people across China and caused 304 deaths.

National health officials announced Thursday that the woman tested positive for the virus, the first confirmed case in the Philippines.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is urging people who are travelling from, or transiting through, China to check border restrictions being implemented by other countries they might be travelling to. The report said the students would be screened upon arrival, but did not say whether they would be quarantined for 14 days.

The Transportation Security Administration sent out new guidelines that will reportedly go into effect Sunday.

All of the remaining patients under investigation are stable.

Britain, which has had two confirmed cases, said it was withdrawing some staff from its embassy and consulates in China.

His death brought the total death toll to 305.

Macau, a gambling hub popular with Chinese mainland tourists, has confirmed eight cases. The Chinese government vowed to "severely" deal with those who hiked prices, or hoard and profiteer on such goods. Production of medical supplies are now at 60% after an early resumption of the manufacturing during the holiday, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said Sunday.

New Zealand and Vietnam also barred foreigners who have been in China, with Vietnam saying it would halt all flights to and from China.

The State Department issued a level four warning - up from urging Americans to "reconsider" travel to China - and said any nationals in China now "should consider departing using commercial means".

The country's Department of Health said a 44-year-old Chinese man from Wuhan was admitted to hospital on January 25 after experiencing fever, coughing and a sore throat. He died on Feb 1.

Spain confirmed its first case, a German man who had close contact with an infected person in Germany and then travelled to the Canary Islands with friends.

Countries continued to evacuate their citizens from Wuhan. The city suspects a patient who turned up at Bellevue Hospital late Friday feeling unwell has the infection.

Genetic traces of the coronavirus were found in the feces of some patients, said the health authority of Shenzhen, one of the most populous cities in China.

Chinese nationals coming from China and connecting through foreign airports will not be allowed to travel. Of the cases, 2,110 are deemed severe.

All the new deaths and most of the new infections on Saturday were in central Hubei province, the epicentre of the flu-like coronavirus outbreak. There are 294 in the province.

China has asked the European Union for help buying medical supplies, the Chinese government said, as the country has run out of beds and supplies.

"We made an aggressive decision in front of an unprecedented threat that action now had the biggest potential to slow this thing down".

The eighth person in the United States diagnosed with the novel coronavirus is a student in his 20s at the University of MA in Boston who recently visited Wuhan.

World Health Organization said it was especially concerned that some cases overseas involved human-to-human transmission.

Over the course of the patient's admission, he developed severe pneumonia, it said.

The United States has reported its first case of person-to-person transmission inside its territory.

A tourist from Wuhan tested positive for the virus on Wednesday and was being treated in isolation in hospital, officials said.

Shortly before the announcement, the Philippines government announced it was temporarily banning travelers from China, Macao, and Hong Kong.
