Denny Hamlin wins 2020 Daytona 500 after big Ryan Newman crash

Deegan was not scheduled to race on Sunday, but she has become a rising star in the racing circuit, having made her debut this month, finishing second to Michael Self in the February 8 ARCA Series season opener.

Drafting, blocking and bumping are essential elements of racing on NASCAR's fastest tracks.

Ryan Newman, who was in the lead spot heading to the finish, was involved in a unsafe crash on the final lap and was sent to the hospital.

Newman was leading the race, which was won by Denny Hamlin, when the incident occurred.

Joey Logano, operating on the outside of a two-wide field, was pushing Aric Almirola down the backstretch, but things went wrong when Almirola reached the back bumper of Brad Keselowski. Could it have been prevented? Hamlin later apologized, not realizing the severity of the crash when celebrating the win. Blaney regrouped and seemingly had enough momentum to drive by Newman when he swerved low. We made our move off of 4, and he blocked the top.

"We pushed Newman there to the lead and then we got a push from the 11". Victory Lane was subdued and attention and concern turned to Newman. "I never stop learning and trying to figure out where I need to put myself at the right time", Hamlin said.

The auto then flipped and was speared in the driver's side by a charging Corey Lajoie, sending Newman's vehicle skidding down the track on its roof with flames streaming from the wreck as Hamlin took the chequered flag for Joe Gibbs Racing.

Denny Hamlin and Ryan Blaney made contact, with Blaney going low, before he clipped the rear of leader Newman's auto, sending him heavily into the outside wall. He remained hospitalized Tuesday afternoon. There has been no official word on the nature or extent of any injuries.
