Indian capital starts counting of local assembly polls

Aam Aadmi Party leaders Atishi and Manish Sisodia on Tuesday won the Delhi Assembly elections in their constituencies after trailing for several hours till afternoon. BJP managed to retain its hold on all three corporations and Tiwari's role in consolidating the "poorvanchal" vote was seen as a crucial factor.

These poll predictions based on exit polls have gained much traction in the past decade, along with the media - both television and digital - deepening their reach into both urban and rural areas. He said the sudden increase augurs well for the BJP, and attributed the rise in the voting percentage to the hard work of the BJP cadre and volunteers.

But that didn't work this time.

Hitting out at the BJP, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that mandate is against the BJP's divisive politics. As many as 672 candidates were in fray for 70 seats.

The elections in the national capital took place in the midst of massive protests in the city and elsewhere over the new citizenship law, an issue which was strongly raised by the BJP top leadership during the campaigning which often turned bitter and vitriolic.

As Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party recorded a win in Delhi polls 2020, the party celebrated the triumph in a different yet interesting way on social media.

"I am personally against the Kejriwal government in Delhi".

PM Narendra Modi's BJP is staring at a big loss.

Shaheen Bagh also remained at the centrestage during the campaign for the high-stake polls.

Put simply, what is happening in India today is that voters are making a distinction between state and federal elections.

The defeat is in keeping with a recent trend of the BJP losing states to regional parties and opposition alliances. BJP failed to win a majority in Maharashtra, Haryana and Jharkhand. Yogendra Yadav of Swaraj Abhiyan, calls it "ticket splitting" - a sign, he says, of "voters' sophistication".

"Modi is a larger than life character at the national level, which obviously gives the BJP a huge advantage in national politics", Sircar said. Rehman polled 36,920 votes more than Kaushal Kumar Mishra of BJP. He ran a vitriolic campaign invoking pro-Hindutva agenda. He even refrained from attacking Mr Modi personally.

"The mandate of Delhi is giving out the general emotion in the country against the BJP".
