Iowa caucus highlights need to reform nomination process

The volunteers running the caucuses did their jobs well in numerous more than 1,600 precincts.

On Monday, a coding issue with the mobile app that the Iowa Democratic Party planned to use to report the results of their state caucus caused a massive delay in declaring the victor. The failure led for calls to abandon attempts for digital voting in any USA elections. "Building an app doesn't solve a problem".

But before that Buttigieg is trying to leverage his lead in the incomplete Iowa results to another strong showing in New Hampshire, which holds its primary on Tuesday. "We are gratified that in the partial data released so far it's clear that in the first and second round more people voted for Bernie than any other candidate in the field". With 71 percent of precincts reporting (1,250 of 1,765), Biden had captured just 15.4 percent of support.

Hagle argued the caucuses are not dead yet partially because past presidents, including current President Donald Trump, support the system.

An effectively two-person race between Sanders and the former vice president, Biden confidants believed, would open the financial spigot, firm up his advantages among nonwhite voters and win over skeptical white moderates now aligned with Buttigieg or Klobuchar.

Iowa's problems have multiple possible solutions. An independent, Sanders calls himself a democratic socialist. The startup's products were incorporated into Shadow, which Acronym said it "launched" previous year.

According to Business Insider, Acronym had previously stated in the "About" section of its website that it had "launched Shadow", but that statement now reads "invested in Shadow" with no mention of launching the firm. Meanwhile, after the delay became apparent, on MSNBC Plouffe downplayed his ties. Well, I've got news for them.

Either the presidential hopeful is learning from these past interactions - and recognizing the unfavorable optics that come with them - or Biden is better prepared to handle interrupting hecklers than he is potential supporters. The opportunism of Joe Biden, who claimed falsely that the results were not to be trusted, alongside Republican stooges like Lindsey Graham, who cynically jumped on the pile claiming that the process was rigged against Sanders, have only made things worse. Still, with the big deal about Iowa being that it goes first and sets expectations, to a degree, for how the rest of the nominating process will go, this kind of screwup is not sitting well with anyone. Shadow's app, which was created over several months, seemed to have been rushed out and insufficiently tested. It's crunch time, and every day in the primary race really matters.

Now it's time for the rest of the Democratic Party to get in gear - and get out the vote.

On Monday, after his prediction came true and the party was unable provide any results on election night, Yepsen was even more morose: "RIP caucuses".

"So we don't know all the results, but we know by the time it's all said and done, Iowa, you have shocked the nation", he said before leaving Iowa.

The Iowa Democratic Party, which initially expressed confidence in the new app, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

CORNISH: Finally, I want to ask you about the Iowa caucuses themselves because they've already been criticized for being too complicated, inaccessible, not representative.
