Raptors' Masai Ujiri Sued Over Cop-Shoving Incident at 2019 NBA Finals

The suit alleges that Ujiri struck the officer - Alan Strickland, who was identified in the lawsuit for the first time since the incident took place - in the face and chest with both fists as he attempted to reach the court in the wake of Toronto winning the first National Basketball Association championship in franchise history. Strickland, who is asking for more than $75,000, had been working security for the game and was told to keep individuals without credentials off the court.

Several bystanders intervened and Ujiri got onto the court without displaying any credentials.

The lawsuit said Strickland is suing for unspecified financial damages for the "mental, physical, emotional and psychological pain and suffering", along with "lost wages, lost opportunity for financial gain, future earning capacity, and past and future medical care and expenses".

According to the report, the lawsuit states that Ujiri's alleged actions were "foreseeable" based on "previous altercations involving similar circumstances".

Strickland has also filed a lawsuit against Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment for failing to ensure his safety.

It was revealed in October that the Sheriff's Office would not pursue charges against Ujiri.

The Globe and Mail viewed still images derived from footage captured by the deputy's body camera and security video at Oracle Arena showing Ujiri with his arms raised straight in front of him toward the deputy. At some point, the deputy told investigators, he was struck in the jaw.

A spokesperson for the Alameda County Sheriff's Office said the officer involved in the altercation with Ujiri, whom the department has never identified, is on medical leave. A request for comment Monday was not immediately returned.

The Alameda County district attorney's office announced in October, just before the start of the 2019-20 National Basketball Association season, that prosecutors would not press criminal charges against Ujiri. The lawsuit alleges that Ujiri acted "despicably, maliciously, fraudulently and oppressively with the wrongful intent of injuring (Strickland) for an improper and evil motive amounting to malice, and in conscious disregard of the plaintiff's rights".

Sheriff's officials have previously said that Ujiri pushed past the deputy, prompting him to push back.
