Ryan Newman Shows 'Great Improvement' Following Horrific Daytona 500 Crash

Hours before, the team posted a photo with Newman and his daughters saying that he is showing improvement. It was a scary scene as his vehicle flew in the air flipping over and while it took some time for any sort of update to be released about his status, NASCAR announced that he was in "serious condition" but his injuries were 'not life-threatening'. He was also joking with staff, friends and family.

"The veteran driver is fully alert and walking around Halifax Medical Center".

The auto landed on the roof and briefly caught fire before paramedics and emergency personnel came to get Newman out of the wrecked vehicle. For years, Newman has been critical of NASCAR's airborne crashes on superspeedways, dating back to a 2009 crash at Talladega.

Newman was extracted from the wreck and was immediately taken to Halifax hospital in Daytona Beach, Florida. Instead, Ross Chastain will fill in for Ryan Newman starting this weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Denny Hamlin won the Daytona 500 that took two days, but the celebration in victory lane was muted because of a crash on the final lap that saw Newman's auto go airborne and flip on the track several times.

"He's holding up, of course devastated and bummed about the situation", Wallace tweeted. We'll proceed to take care of him and his members of the family in our concepts. "IT'S RACING. Just unfortunate to be on either end of it".

In the last lap of the NASCAR race, Newman spun into the outside wall before bouncing off the barrier, flipping into the air.

"I know Ford should be proud to have him under their banner because he was so content on pushing his Ford teammate to win the biggest race of the year", Wallace wrote. "Which makes it worse [because] a simple selfless gesture went south in the blink of an eye".
