SA vs ENG, 1st ODI: South Africa opt to bowl

"The wicket looks good but it could be a bit slow", said De Kock. "To start off with a win would be great for the team environment and the boys seem to be up for it".

Interim director of cricket Graeme Smith said recently that de Kock would have an extended run as captain of the one-day side with du Plessis expected to quit worldwide cricket later this year - long before the next World Cup in 2023.

South Africa have lost a slew of players to retirement or non-selection, including du Plessis, Hashim Amla, J.P. Duminy and Imran Tahir, while fast bowler Kagiso Rabada was given an overdue rest from a series after being virtually ever-present for South Africa in the past three years. This defeat was as chastening as anything seen in recent years in a period when Eoin Morgan's side have usually dominated.

Sam Curran missed a hard caught and bowled chance off De Kock, whose booming drive off the left-arm seamer caught the edge only to fly beyond the grasp of wicketkeeper Bairstow.

Watch the second ODI between South Africa and England from 10.30am, Friday on Sky Sports Cricket and Main Event.

Chris Woakes, the only member of the World Cup final bowling attack to feature, was economical with the new ball and had opener Reeza Hendricks caught behind in the seventh over but the other bowlers struggled. He was trapped lbw by Chris Jordan and tried a desperate review.

Poor deliveries by spinners Parkinson and Denly presented big-hitting opportunities, while De Kock also took the attack to Tom Curran with a massive six straight over his head. Root, Woakes and Jordan.

Root and Morgan steadied England with a partnership of 30, but Root was brilliantly run out by a direct hit from Van der Dussen and Morgan edged left-arm wrist spinner Tabraiz Shamsi to slip for 11 three balls later.

England used the start of a new World Cup cycle to give ODI debuts to batsman Tom Banton, who made 18, and legspinner Matt Parkinson, who had 0-48 off 8.4 overs.

"Before the next (50-over) World Cup we have two T20 World Cups that we are eyeing, so this series against South Africa will allow us to build a broader squad so that in three or four years' time we have a substantial group to select from, just like we did before this past World Cup", Morgan told reporters on Monday. "We are in a rebuilding phase and we are looking forward to the next World Cup squad.

What happened prior to the World Cup last summer was a complete breakdown in trust between Alex and the team", Morgan was quoted as saying by Sky Sports Cricket.

Few of England's back-up players advanced their cause in a strangely flat performance.

Joe Denly was largely responsible for England reaching what appeared to be a reasonable total on a slow pitch.

Tom Curran was unable to hang on to a desperately tough caught and bowled chance when De Kock was on 80 before the opener brought up his 15th ODI hundred, after which he was bowled by Root.

In his first match since being appointed South Africa's one-day captain, De Kock won the toss and asked England to bat first although when Jason Roy got off to a flyer, he may have briefly regretted his decision.
