Universal Pictures previously released a statement back in August 2019 indicating they would not be releasing the film. The president, without mentioning the film by name, said it was intended "to inflame and cause chaos".
Now, the film has a release date and will be shown in more than 3,000 screens across the United States. However, it was unclear if they were depicted as heroes.
In the new trailer, Swank's character, evidently the leader of the liberal hunters, appears to address the political controversy.
Later she says, "You actually believed we were hunting human beings for sport?" This new look at The Hunt is owning the controversy surrounding it by calling itself "the most talked about movie of the year" that no one has seen yet. But then word of the plot - "a dozen MAGA types who wake up in a clearing and realize they are being stalked for sport by elite liberals" is how the Hollywood Reporter described it - got out and caught the attention of the president. They don't know they've been chosen... for a very specific objective ... They don't know where they are, or how they got there. "She turns the tables on the killers, picking them off, one by one, as she makes her way toward the mysterious woman (Hilary Swank) at the center of it all".
Along with the trailer and official description.
As yet, there is no scheduled date for release in the United Kingdom or Australia. With Craig Zobel in the director's chair, The Hunt will arrive in Stateside cinemas on 13 March, though there's no information yet as to whether it'll be day and date in the UK.
The Hunt has been co-written by Watchmen creator Damon Lindelof and Nick Cuse and is based on a short story from 1924 called The Most Dangerous Game.
Joining Emmy nominee Betty Gilpin (GLOW, The Grudge) and Oscar victor Hilary Swank (Million Dollar Baby, Reaping) in the film are Ike Barinholtz (The Oath), Emma Roberts (American Horror Story), Justin Hartley (This is Us), Glenn Howerton (It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia), and Oscar nominee Amy Madigan (Twice in a Lifetime).
There's also a new trailer, which focuses less on the actual hunting and more on the conspiracy theory that seems to be behind the hunt.
