Trump Impeachment Trial Moves to Closing Arguments

Trump Impeachment Trial Moves to Closing Arguments

In December, the House of Representatives charged him with two articles of impeachment - abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. He implored senators to realize that without a vote to convict, the Senate will "allow the president's misconduct to stand".

His assertion, made on Twitter, came with Washington also awaiting the results of Monday's all-important Iowa caucuses. "(Trump) is eager to go before the American people in this upcoming election".

"Your duty demands that you convict President Trump", Colorado lawmaker Jason Crow said as prosecutors began presenting their closing arguments at just the third impeachment trial in United States history.

But the poll still found Sanders, who describes himself as a democratic socialist, with a lead over Trump, earning 49 percent support in a head-to-head matchup compared to Trump's 45 percent.

Trump's acquittal is all but guaranteed, with at least 20 Republicans needed to reach 67 votes needed for removal from office. A two-thirds majority is required to remove the president.

On Friday, just two Republican senators - Mitt Romney of Utah and Susan Collins of ME - joined Democrats in voting to introduce witnesses into the impeachment trial.

A trial without trying to obtain more evidence from first-hand witnesses, Democrats have argued, would render an acquittal "meaningless."

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer called it a "grand tragedy".

Prosecutors relied on a 28,000-page report compiled over three months of proceedings in the Democratic-controlled House, including the public and private testimony from 17 witnesses, many current and former ambassadors and national security officials with close proximity to the Ukraine dealings.

Representative Adam Schiff, who heads the Democratic prosecution team, said that Trump, if left in office, would continue to seek foreign interference in the November 3 election in which he is asking voters to give him four more years as president.

That is the crux of the case against Mr. Trump.

Later Monday, members of the Senate will be able to make their own views heard as they give speeches ahead of a planned final vote on Wednesday.

Among the material was more than 28,000 pages of documents gathered during the House impeachment inquiry.

Varney said we should expect the president to address the blue-collar boom, employment and trade agreements during the State of the Union - all "positive and unifying" although Speaker Nancy Pelosi will be sitting right behind him.

"If the president was upset with what the Bidens were doing in Ukraine, he should've called the (U.S.) attorney general", William Barr, Alexander said.

Sens. Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Mitt Romney (R-Utah) both voted with Democrats in the failed bid to compel witnesses last week.

Bolton reportedly says in a forthcoming book that Trump told him military aid to Ukraine was tied to Kiev's investigating Biden - corroborating the central claim against the president.

But, he added, "I think he shouldn't have done it". I don't think she's gonna be there too long, either. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) added, "I've said from the beginning that it was not a flawless phone call and there are elements that were not appropriate".

"Senators, we know what the President did and why he did it", Rep. Sylvia Garcia (D-TX) argued, before seemingly referencing Sen.
