‘Tuesday Night Massacre’ at the Justice Dept.: What happens now?

After attacking the prosecutors and judge in the trial of his long-time adviser Roger Stone, President Donald Trump on Thursday turned his sights on the jury that convicted the veteran Republican operative, elevating concerns about political interference in the US judicial process.

The departures on Tuesday raised immediate questions over whether Mr. Trump, who earlier in the day had blasted the original sentencing recommendation as "very terrible and unfair", had at least indirectly exerted his will on a Justice Department that he often views as an arm of the White House.

On Twitter, Trump referred to a Fox News story that accused some of the jurors in the case of political bias. The Justice Department has also said it did not confer with the White House, with one senior official on Tuesday calling the timing of Trump's tweet "an inconvenient coincidence".

Each had signed onto a Monday sentencing memo that recommended between seven and nine years in prison for Mr.

He didn't suggest Stone should go free but said the initial recommendation was excessive.

The ongoing developments following the removal of U.S. Attorney Jessie Liu, who oversaw the prosecutions of President Trump's deputy campaign chairman Rick Gates, President Trump's former national security advisor Michael Flynn, and President Trump's longtime political adviser Roger Stone.

The letter also took note of Barr's creation of an "intake process" for Rudy Giuliani, the president's personal attorney, and others to provide the Justice Department information regarding Ukraine. Stone, had been based on a "bogus narrative".

Immediately after, the DOJ announced that it would revise the sentencing recommendation.

"The president is claiming that rigging the rules is perfectly legitimate", Schumer said Wednesday from the Senate floor.

As Jim said, there's - the attorney general and the president can be as chummy as they want. Before being brought on to the Mueller team, he worked on civil cases at the Justice Department.

"We don't wake up in the morning wanting to impeach him", stated Swalwell. Barr told reporters earlier this week.

"I have the absolute right to do it".

"I have no doubt that she will not be deterred, pressured or intimidated by the unwarranted and inappropriate remarks of the president or anyone else for that matter", said a colleague, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

In a tweet, Trump blasted the original sentencing recommendation as "horrible" and "unfair". He declined to say whether he might consider commuting Stone's sentence.

The departures began soon after.

Hours later, the Justice Department abandoned the recommendation, prompting all four prosecutors to quit the case.

Jed's post-resignation status was not clear, however.

Another federal prosecutor in Washington, Michael Marando, withdrew from the case, and a fourth trial team member, Jonathan Kravis, resigned his position as an assistant US attorney.

According to congressman Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.), impeachment is still not off the table after the Justice Department intervened on behalf of Republican operative Roger Stone.

Politico's Cheney notes, "Democrats have a long list of issues they're likely to press Barr on, including his involvement in decisions surrounding Trump's decision to withhold military funds from Ukraine past year, and his handling of a whistleblower complaint about the episode that DOJ determined should be withheld from Congress, overruling an intelligence community inspector general".

U.S. District Judge Paul Friedman, another colleague of Jackson's on the court in Washington, recently warned of the consequences of similar attacks from the president.

Still, prosecutors often ask judges to throw the book at defendants who roll the dice on a trial rather than plead guilty. She presided over the trial of Gregory Craig, a Democratic former White House counsel who was charged in a spinoff from the Mueller probe and was acquitted in September.

Jackson, 65, has played a central role in cases involving Trump associates and Mueller's Russian Federation investigation. He did not testify, and his lawyers did not call any witnesses in his defense. She sentenced Trump's former deputy campaign chairman, Rick Gates, in December.
