Boris Johnson Announces UK Lockdown, Says Coronavirus Is Biggest Threat In Decades

All public assemblies of more than two people, excluding people who live together, will be banned, the prime minister said.

The prime minister took the extraordinary action - with support from the opposition - after the death toll reached 336 Monday.

The Government announce new and stricter rules for the public in order to stop the spread of coronavirus, and in turn ease the pressure on the NHS.

Travelling to and from work, but only where this is absolutely necessary and can not be done from home.

Johnson, who cancelled his daily afternoon news conference, is now meeting with senior members of his government and health experts within the COBRA emergency committee.

As of Monday morning, a total of 6,650 people had tested positive for the coronavirus in the United Kingdom, with 335 deaths, according to the Department of Health and Social Care.

Until now, Johnson has relied on persuading people to stop socialising and stay in their homes, saying it is the best way to save lives by preventing the state-run National Health Service becoming overwhelmed.

Government guidance says that even when doing these activities, people should be minimising the time spent outside the home and ensuring they are two metres apart from anyone outside of your household. "You have to stay two meters from each other".

He also said the government had bought 3.5 million coronavirus antibody tests so that people who suspect they have had the virus would be able to find out for sure.

Despite the announcement, busy carriages were still seen on the London tube network Tuesday morning, as under the new measures the public will still be allowed to travel to and from work, "but only where this absolutely can not be done from home".

"Close now. We'll have emergency powers within days to force you to close and we will use these powers if we have to", she warned.

Meanwhile, all shops selling non-essential goods, such as clothing and electronic stores, are ordered to close, and places like libraries, playgrounds, and outdoor gyms will be closed.

Britain has urged 1.5 million people identified by the NHS as being at higher risk of severe illness if they contract coronavirus to not leave their homes, to protect themselves. All social events, including weddings and baptisms were stopped, but funerals were exempted.

Johnson continues that citizens should not be venturing to meet friends or family members that do not live in the same household.

Finance minister Rishi Sunak told parliament the government was working on measures to help self-employed people, but said these had to be practical and fair.

The first is "shopping for basic necessities like food and medicine".

Johnson said people must stay inside except to buy essentials and take daily exercise, but there were questions about how the new rules will be enforced.

Those professions included doctors and nurses, justice system workers, key government staff, food production, distribution and delivery roles and police among many others.

"And I can assure you that we will keep these restrictions under constant review".
