Eight New Cases of COVID-19 in British Columbia

Currently, B.C. remains in the containment phase, according to Health Minister Adrian Dix.

Dr. Bonnie Henry, the provincial health officer, said the woman was diagnosed with COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus that emerged in China, after visiting a doctor for what she thought was the flu.

"We will be ready to act when it's necessary", she said.

The warning says that travel restrictions imposed to control the spread of the new coronavirus are making it increasingly hard to leave Iran.

"So I would just say about that, watch this space". "Worldwide travel can be very challenging right now".

Hajdu said how Canada would respond to a community outbreak would depend on the scale and circumstances of the outbreak, but it would include support from the federal government. "It comes down to your own risk assessment..."

British Columbians still carry a relatively low risk for catching the virus, said Dr. Henry, adding that everything is being done to keep it that way. "If you're going to seek medical care, if you need to be out when you're sick, then putting a mask on keeps your droplets in and protects others from you".

"Let the people who are sick wear masks", she said, noting other basic hygiene practices, including hand-washing, should be followed as well.

"This includes coordination of efforts with other orders of government", the office said in the statement. The woman had one close contact and very few others, Henry said.

The committee is to meet regularly to ensure government leadership, coordination, and preparedness for a response to the health and economic impacts of the virus.

There are now 46 COVID-19 cases across Canada, including patients who have already recovered. At some point in the future, transmission clusters could start to appear here in B.C., and that's not the time to be heading out to the store to pick up supplies, she said - nor is now the time to stockpile a doomsday quantity of food. The priority is to delay the onset of widespread community transmission for as long as possible.

According to the Canadian government, it is increasingly hard to leave the country.

He said the province is prepared to work with institutions and businesses to help them manage "a sustained three to four month outbreak".

She did not show symptoms during travel but became ill at home. "So that planning is well underway and those preparations are well underway in every health authority". It would also ensure readiness to implement hospital-wide protocols to safely triage and separate anyone presenting with respiratory illness.

The WHO has advised against the application of travel or trade restrictions to countries dealing with COVID-19 cases, citing evidence showing that restricting the movement of people and goods during public health emergencies is ineffective in most situations and may have a significant economic and social impact.

"The health authorities have been fully integrated from the beginning and obviously, the work of health care workers is critically important at the front lines", Dix noted.
