El Capitan supercomputer at LLNL to break 2 exaflops barrier

Describing AMD's "multi-generational" graphics and compute roadmaps, CEO Dr Lisa Su outlined the company's corporate strategy and recapped successes across the client, cloud, gaming, and supercomputing spaces in recent years. 'In our three U.S. exascale wins this a year ago, which includes the U.S. Department of Energy's Frontier at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the HPE systems and technologies along with AMD processors and GPUs have become a unique solution for high-performance and exascale-class computing and we look forward to continuing our collaboration to further bolster innovation'. It will also be used by two other national nuclear labs, Sandia National Laboratories and Los Alamos National Laboratory.

The supercomputer is expected to deliver two exaflops of computers, or two quintillion mathematical calculations per second, making it 10 times faster than the world's fastest supercomputer now in use and more powerful than the world's top 200 fastest supercomputers combined. AMD also announced that work on the subsequent Epyc "Genoa" generation based on Zen 4 cores is progressing, and these CPUs are expected to be manufactured on a new 5nm process, to hit the market by 2022. Cray went on to become a world leader in supercomputer design. The enormous computing power required has also become a source of global competition and tension.

HPE has announced that it will deliver the world's fastest exascale supercomputer for the US Department of Energy's (DOE) National Security Administration (NNSA).

The United States has barred USA firms from doing business with some Chinese supercomputer groups that U.S. officials say have Chinese military ties.

New approach using accelerator-centric compute blades (in a 4:1 GPU to CPU ratio, connected by the 3 Gen AMD Infinity Architecture for high-bandwidth, low latency connections) to increase performance for data-intensive AI, machine learning and analytics needs by offloading processing from the CPU to the GPU. AMD shares are up 5.4% to $49.25. Remarkably, the supercomputer is claimed to be able to deliver greater performance than the existing top 200 supercomputers combined.

This also sheds some light on what we can expect from Sony and Microsoft's next-gen game consoles, both based on semi-custom AMD CPUs and CPUs, and both expected to launch this year.

AMD and Cray last year won a deal for a 1.5 exaflop computer with the Energy Department, and Intel and Cray last year announced a supercomputer created to run at 1 exaflop.
