Pentagon seeks 'to reconsider' cloud contract to Microsoft

In response to Amazon's claims in court, DoD has now responded in court that it is ready to "reconsider certain aspects" of its decision to award the contract to Microsoft.

"During the proposed remand, the agency could make decisions that would moot this action, in whole or in part, and may obviate the need for further litigation in this court", the government said in court papers made public on Thursday night.

"DoD wishes to reconsider its award decision in response to the other technical challenges presented by AWS", the government attorneys said in the filing.

Amazon Web Services sued the federal government after Microsoft emerged as the surprise victor of the JEDI contract past year.

Microsoft said it "remained confident" its bid was "technologically superior".

The Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure Cloud (JEDI) contract was awarded to Microsoft following an evaluation of proposals from a number of different companies, including Amazon, Oracle, and IBM (Google pulled out).

"While we disagree with the Court's decision, we must address the findings in the Court's Order with the intent of ensuring our warfighters will get this urgent and critically needed technology as quickly and efficiently as possible", she said.

In July previous year, President Trump began questioning whether the process was fair, telling reporters he was getting "tremendous complaints about the contract with the Pentagon and Amazon". Revamping the cloud The JEDI program will ultimately see all military branches sharing information in a cloud-based system boosted by artificial intelligence. Bezos, who also owns The Washington Post, is a frequent target of the U.S. president, who claims the newspaper is biased against him.

"We believe the Department of Defense made the correct decision when they awarded the contract".

In October, following a delay, the contract was awarded to Microsoft. In additional to critiques about Microsoft's online storage capability, Amazon has claimed that President Donald Trump's personal animus toward Amazon improperly influenced the outcome of the JEDI competition.
