Prime Minister announces United Kingdom lockdown starting tonight

The Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, announced just after 5pm on Friday the 20 March that all restaurants, pubs, cafes, bars, gyms and cinemas across the United Kingdom are to shut down with immediate effect.

Yet, he urged: "Do not go out tonight, you may think you are invincible but there is no guarantee you won't get mild symptoms, be a carrier of the disease and pass it on to others".

The Welsh Government is to order the closure of pubs, clubs, restaurants and other businesses to try to stop the spread of coronavirus.

Nightclubs, gyms, cinemas, leisure centers, theaters, and betting shops will all be closed from Friday night and are not expected to reopen on Saturday morning.

"A lot of people are making a real heroic effort to comply with the advice we've given, but as I've said. we keep everything under continuous review".

Today, the number of worldwide deaths from coronavirus surpassed 10,000 people, Italy has overtaken China's coronavirus death toll, and the number of United Kingdom fatalities reached 184.

At total of 177 people with the virus have died so far.

"I don't know if this is safe".

He added: "We want you as far as possible to stay at home".

"I do accept that what we're doing is extraordinary", Johnson told reporters in London on Friday.

In the same press conference, Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced a series of radical measures to protect businesses and their employees.

On social media, The Greyhound pub in Ipswich said: "Running this wonderful little pub for the last nine years has been an absolute blast".

Still, in just over a week, Prime Minister Boris Johnson's government has announced a series of stimulus measures aimed at keeping a lid on the economic damage likely from the virus outbreak.

Johnson also stated he hopes to "turn the tide" of coronavirus within 12 weeks, saying: "I am absolutely confident we can turn the tide within the next 12 weeks".

There have been 167 deaths in England from the coronavirus outbreak, as well as six in Scotland, three in Wales and one in Northern Ireland.

In a first-ever intervention, Mr. Sunak said that 80% of wages for those unable to work due to the crisis will be covered by the government.

There are also some new measures in place for freelancers, including a raising of the universal credit allowance and the Working Tax Credit basic element.

Hancock said that people should still be able to go shopping for essentials, saying the measures would be used in extreme circumstances, where people are obviously disregarding the government's advice.
