Sydney high school closed after student contracts coronavirus

The two new NSW cases include a man in his 60s, who recently returned from Italy and is now under investigation, and a second man in his 40s who is a friend of a previously confirmed case.

An 18-year-old woman on Friday became the state's 28th case after she had been in close contact with a previously known case in western Sydney.

And the NSW education department is preparing for the likelihood of more schools shutting down by ensuring students will be able to access classes online, The Daily Telegraph reported.

The man in his 80s and woman in her 20s had arrived in Australia from Thailand and London via Singapore respectively and had both been placed in isolation.

As with the flu, the coronavirus or COVID-19 particularly affects the elderly, a spokesperson for the Department of Health said.

Testing has been conducted at a childcare facility near the nursing home where the 95-year-old woman died, to determine if children who were part of a recent visit were responsible for bringing the virus in.

A Sydney school will reopen on Monday following a thorough clean after a male student tested positive.

The children from Banksia Cottage childcare centre had visited residents at the nearby Dorothy Henderson Lodge at Macquarie Park on 24 February.

As the hunt for virus victims ramps up state and federal authorities are clashing over the "tracing" measures used to find them, after NSW authorities say they've hit a stumbling block.

One of the two infected male residents wasn't directly cared for by the sick worker, and Dr Chant has warned more cases from the home are expected, with residents continuing to be actively screened for any sign of illness.

Chief Medical Officer Professor Brendan Murphy, Australian Aged Care Quality and Safety Commissioner Janet Anderson and chair of the Communicable Diseases Network Dr Sonya Bennett are among those who will provide key briefings.

On the day the children visited, the aged care nurse with the virus was not present.

Dr Chant said families and their children would be invited to a clinic tonight to get assessed.

NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard on Friday insisted "there is no other place on this earth that we would rather be during this challenging time".

Two Sydney doctors also diagnosed went to a conference that was attended by 77 medical practitioners and professionals.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian urged community calm and said health authorities were working on reducing the virus' spread.

However, authorities say the doctor had already come into contact with a "large and diverse" range of patients in his workplace.

Mr Hazzard said members of the public, and even some staff, had expressed concerns that it was no longer safe to attend Ryde Hospital.

"Her travel details are being obtained and will be disclosed if she posed a risk to any other passengers on her flight", NSW Health said.
