Coronavirus: Leeds United legend Norman hunter dies after contracting

Hunter, who won 28 England caps, was part of the England World Cup squad that won the tournament on home soil in 1966.

Hunter was admitted to hospital on 10 April after testing positive for coronavirus.

Leeds said on the club website that former England defender Hunter was in the hospital last week over the novel coronavirus diagnosis but he died early Friday.

"His legacy will never be forgotten and our thoughts are with Norman's family and friends at this very hard time".

"His legacy will never be forgotten", said the announcement, describing the "Leeds family" as "devastated".

"Medals don't mean much to me".

"I remember we were on a trip once and we were playing the crew and I was the referee and he was playing".

"Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with his family, friends, former teammates and everyone connected with Leeds United".

Hunter's 14-year spell at Leeds ended in 1976, when he joined Bristol City.

Carragher said: "He was not just a Leeds legend but one of those names that went all around the country - Norman "Bite Your Legs" Hunter".

Ex-England midfielder Peter Reid, a former Leeds manager, wrote: "RIP Norman Hunter, a giant of a man". He was a smashing person much loved and admired by all who knew him!

"A lot of great players have walked through the gates of Elland Road and Norman was right up there with the best of them".

"When Gareth and the team played at Elland Road just before the last World Cup, it was more than fitting that he was part of our delegation in the suite that bears his name".

Many fans observed the cruel nature of Hunter's premature death during a month in which he would have been likely to have seen Leeds win promotion to the Premier League.

"His knowledge of football was huge. He could be critical but never offended anybody".

"Along with thousands of people in Leeds and beyond Norman Hunter was a hero of mine and I have treasured memories of watching him play as a child".
