Cruise ships cleared to dock in Florida after onboard corona outbreak

Broward County Commissioner Michael Udine confirmed on Thursday morning that the two ships can dock but he said that it is subject to approval between Carnival Corp., which owns Holland America, and the county.

"We reached out to them as soon as we heard they were on the ship to make sure they were OK and had everything they needed", Buchanan said.

The couple has been confined to their cabin for fear a half-hour of daily "fresh air time" would "jeopardize any attempts to get us to dock", the Balgopals wrote.

Guests have not left the ship since March 14 and have self-isolated in their staterooms since March 22.

For almost three weeks, passengers have not been able to leave the ships, and four elderly passengers have died on the Zaandam _ at least two from COVID-19, ship owner Carnival Cruise Lines said in a statement. The Infinity is waiting off Florida's west coast, and the Oasis of the Seas is positioned off Fort Lauderdale. The remaining passengers were slowly being allowed to board flights for home.

"We've got an email chain for everybody who wants to be linked", he said.

There are still cruise ships out there that have not yet stopped operations and that includes the Coral princess operated Princess Cruises. But the ship struggled to find a port to let passengers disembark and return home after nearby countries such as Argentina and Brazil shut their borders to foreigners during the pandemic.

Not long after, the crew began missing out stops and then, heading for Buenos Aires, passengers were advised to book flights home from the Argentinian city.

It added that disembarkation was expected to be completed by Friday evening, with priority given to those who need immediate care.

Cruise Ships Virus Outbreak

U.S. President Donald Trump says there are plans to remove almost 250 Canadians from two cruise ships and get them back to Canada. Most of its ships, including the Zaandam and the Rotterdam sail under the Dutch flag.

"The family members are devastated and filled with disbelief", said Bessler, who said she had been discussing the situation with other families of passengers in a private Facebook group.

The ship had been denied access to a number of ports in South America and the passengers have been stranded since mid-March.

Global Affairs Canada didn't reply to a request for comment in time for the publication of this story.

Though the details of the plan have yet to be released, Holland America said in a statement on its website that more than 1,200 passengers from both ships would transfer straight to charter flights to their homes. Only the Coral Princess is still at sea. Four passengers aboard the Zaandam have died, two of them after becoming infected by the coronavirus.

"We are in regular contact with the Irish citizens on board and are providing all possible consular assistance".

Nurses screen patients for COVID-19 virus testing at a drive-up location outside Medstar St. Mary's Hospital on March 17, 2020 in Leonardtown, Maryland.

He said that cruise ships have strict cleansing and sanitation protocols and adopted enhanced screenings during the COVID-19 outbreak. His sister, Mary Beth Van Horn, was driving his auto to leave it ready for him at the airport and said she was grateful the passengers were welcomed after days of negotiations.
