Early signs are encouraging for potential coronavirus drug

The FTSE 100 was up 2.6% at 5777 at 09:28 BST and USA stock futures rose ahead of markets opening. It's not a slam dunk by any means. However, ICMR is awaiting developments of the World Health Organisation's Solidarity Trial.

In one clinical trial at the University of Chicago School of Medicine, 125 patients suffering from COVID-19 received daily infusions of Remdesivir. "Timing is everything. I can't say for certain they would have been intubated otherwise, but it's encouraging", said infectious diseases pharmacist Katherine K. Perez, Pharm.D.

"The best news is that most of our patients have already been discharged, which is great".

"We will wait for the results from the World Health Organization solidarity trial and also see if some other companies can work on this to proceed further".

As the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic outbreak spreads like wildfire across the globe, the entire world is laying in anxious wait for a cure or a vaccine to combat the virus which has brought normal life to a standstill as nearly the entirety of human race have been forced to go into self-isolation and home-quarantine as major cities remain in strict lockdown, all in fear of the virus.

"But certainly when we start [the] drug, we see fever curves falling", she said.

The trial is of the drug Remdesivir, an antiviral developed by California-based Gilead Sciences. Mullane also shared that people have "come off ventilators a day after starting therapy".

All told, 237 out of a target study population of 300 were enrolled before it was placed on hold, they said, and with no data being revealed "any benefits were likely inconclusive", they suggested. Remdesivir has demonstrated a potent ability to inhibit this viral replication in human cells and is now being tried in clinical trials of patients with the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes COVID-19.

An analysis of patients receiving remdesivir under "compassionate use" rules was published last week in the New England Journal of Medicine. Gilead is set to release more fulsome clinical data later this month.

Very ill coronavirus patients treated with the Ebola drug Remdesivir are showing promising - and quick - results, according to a new report.

Indian drugmaker Cipla said a few weeks ago that it was also working on the drug along with the state-run Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).

Meanwhile, Gilead, in an emailed statement on Thursday, said, "The totality of the data need to be analyzed in order to draw any conclusions from the trial".

A Gilead Sciences Inc. office is shown in Foster City, California, U.S. May 1, 2018. Thread! Spoiler: Remdesivir may work, but we won't find that out from a "study" with no fricking control group and with patients who statistically are *not expected to die anyway*.

Shares of the company surged 10 per cent in trading after the market closed.
