Georgia Governor Claims He Was Surprised to Learn of Asymptomatic Coronavirus Carriers

"Finding out that this virus is now transmitting before people see signs ... we didn't know that until the last 24 hours", Gov. Brian Kemp said Wednesday in justifying his delay in ordering a lockdown.

Kemp has been under pressure in recent weeks as both he and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis were reluctant to enact stay-at-home orders or other social distancing policies.

Governor Kemp had initially resisted signing a shelter-in-place order due to the effect it would have on the state's economy. According to NBC News, prominent doctors including Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and Dr. Deborah Birx, the coronavirus response coordinator for the White House Coronavirus Task Force, have publicly discussed asymptomatic transmission for several weeks.

"New York has gotten far more than any other state, including hospitals and a hospital ship, but no matter what, always complaining", the president said in a tweet addressing criticisms from Sen.
