Number of New York Coronavirus Deaths Rose by 630, Governor Cuomo Says

"But there's part of me that says it's good that we're not at the apex because we're not yet ready", Cuomo said. We're not at the apex so we're still in the stage where we have the luxury - if you will - of gathering as much as we can'.

"Part of me would like to be at the apex, and just, let's do it", Cuomo continued.

His office could not provide the wording of the executive order Friday afternoon.

U.S. President Donald Trump announced late Friday he would prevent the export of N95 protective masks and surgical gloves to ensure they are available in the U.S. - prompting neighboring Canada's prime minister to respond that cross-border aid goes well beyond supplies.

Cuomo said that the 2,500-bed facility that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built in the Javits Center would "quickly" be converted into a facility for patients who have tested positive for the novel coronavirus, after initially being a facility for non-COVID-19 patients.

NY has now confirmed 113,704 cases of the virus, and 3,565 people have died, Cuomo said.

Louisiana has become a USA hot spot for the virus, on Saturday reporting a jump in deaths to 409.

"Moreover, when the pandemic wave hits upstate NY, the governor will ask downstate hospitals for similar help", Rich Azzopardi, a senior adviser to the governor, said in a statement.

Oregon Gov. Kate Brown tweeted that her state is sending over the materials because they are in a "better position right now" than NY, and that "we must do all that we can to help those on the front lines of this response". Minority Leader Joseph Lorigo told WBFO while the governor has done a "decent" job handling the overall crisis, the order to redistribute ventilators and PPE once again creates a downstate-versus-upstate division in a time when all of the state needs to be prepared. About 15,000 people were hospitalized statewide, a lot of them in the city.

Cuomo said there are also 85,000 medical professionals who have volunteered to help NY out during the crisis, including 22,000 from out of state. He said New Jersey, which has more than 29,000 cases, was the first state to take such a measure.

Another virus hotspot, the southern state of Louisiana, said deaths had jumped by 20% to 370 on Friday, with 10,000 confirmed cases.

Through his daily briefings, Cuomo has been a steady, reassuring and widely admired fixture during the crisis, avoiding politics and personal attacks as he focuses on the state doing the most it can so that as few of its residents die as possible. We're still working on the capacity of the system. "Our new reality is unreal", Craig Spencer, the director of global health in emergency medicine at New York's Columbia University medical center, wrote on Twitter on Thursday night. The island is situated just east of New York City and includes Nassau and Suffolk counties. More than 3,500 people statewide have died, and about 15,000 coronavirus patients are hospitalized.

Some upstate NY officials have criticized the plan to move ventilators, saying it puts rural hospitals at risk.

The New York governor said the Chinese government would facilitate a donation of 1,000 ventilators to arrive into JFK airport on Saturday.
