One more case of COVID-19 reported in northern B.C.

The main factor driving all decisions about the response will continue to be the COVID-19 case count. A return to even 80 per cent of normal interpersonal contact would likely trigger an exponential growth in new cases and new hospitalizations, the data shows.

"We do not have enough herd or community immunity to allow that to happen", she said.

"International travel, the way that we used to think of it, and meetings where we all got together or conferences, those are not going to happen this year", said Henry.

686 in the Vancouver Coastal Health region.

She noted she expects the summer to bring more opportunities to connect with friends and family.

Prisons in B.C. are at a heightened state of pandemic awareness after one inmate from the Mission Medium Institution died Wednesday due to COVID-19 and as another facility, the North Fraser Pretrial Centre, is being closely monitored following a positive test of a staff member Thursday.

The latest modelling numbers provided by B.C.'s top doctor shows the province is starting to bend the COVID-19 curve.

BC modelling numbers for COVID-19 are expected to be update for the first time since March.

Coombs, who is working with others on modelling the epidemic in B.C., said it's important to remember that not many people have been exposed to the virus in B.C., so the population remains susceptible.

Among those diagnoses, 983 people have recovered, 120 people are in hospital and 56 in intensive care.

While cases appear to be levelling off in B.C., Henry said it's crucial that residents keep physically distancing while also minimizing any unintended negative consequences.

"This again reflects that young, healthy people have relatively mild illness", Henry said Friday.

Across B.C. there are 951 critical care beds available, of which 58 were filled with COVID-19 patients and 377 with non-COVID-19 critical care patients as of April 13 at midnight.

But Singapore, which had checked the spread of the virus, recently had to reinstitute restrictions because of a surge in cases. Dix said the province will continue planning on that basis. Dr. Henry says that finding the right balance is "even more challenging because of the nature of the COVID-19 virus".

Those awaiting elective surgery had cause for some celebration on Friday, as Dix said planning is underway to reschedule some postponed elective surgeries starting next month - nearly 14,000 surgeries had been postponed as of this week.

"Our next big challenge is to continue these goals without undermining our social fabric, without undermining our economy".

"It's not going to be as restrictive as we are now, but we need to have those safeguards in place so that we can monitor things in time".
