The broadcast, which aired at 1900GMT, is one of only fifth special addresses that the queen has made, outside of her annual Christmas day message, in her 68-year reign.

The head of state's hand-written speech is the first by a monarch at a time of national crisis since the Second World War when her father King George VI addressed the nation over 70 years ago.

"If you do not need us to need to take the step to ban train of all types outdoors of your individual house, then you have to observe the foundations", Hancock implored the citizenry through BBC. "The queen's life is on hold - she doesn't know if or when she'll be able to return to Buckingham Palace or resume her duties, which is why she's been forced to rethink her position".

She paid tribute to Diana as "an exceptional and gifted human being", adding: "In good times and bad, she never lost her capacity to smile and laugh, nor to inspire others with her warmth and kindness".

"It reminds me of the very first broadcast I made, in 1940, helped by my sister."

In a rare address to the nation taking place Sunday, the queen plans to exhort Britons to rise to the challenge of the coronavirus pandemic.

"We should take comfort in that while we may still have more to endure, better days will return".

Her last was after her mother's death in 2002.
